After losing to Brentford, ten Hag criticizes Man United as being “naive.”
The notion of bringing in Casemiro and Adrien Rabiot as a midfield tandem this summer has been shelved by Manchester United’s recruitment boss John Murtough. Negotiations for the former fell through due to pay demands, and a swoop for the latter is allegedly being pursued in its place because the chances of a double deal seem remote.
Rabiot, whose contract expires in a year, was quickly agreed upon by United and Juventus for a £15 million cost. The agreement is thought to have fallen through, though, after Murtaugh traveled to Italy and met with the Frenchman’s agent and mother, Veronique, a very shrewd negotiator.
According to rumors, Rabiot’s team wanted him to make more money than some of United’s highest-paid players, who take home well over £200,000 a week. The midfielder has fluctuated in form throughout his career, which has included stops at Paris Saint-Germain, Toulouse, and Juventus.
With a contract for Frenkie de Jong slipping through their fingers, the Red Devils are seeking alternative midfield possibilities. The Dutchman was a priority for United this summer under new manager Erik ten Hag, but they were unable to persuade him to sign.
One of the most recent names to surface as a substitute possibility is Casemiro, and according to The Guardian, United is pursuing a deal for him instead of or in addition to acquiring Rabiot. Due to his lengthy contract at the Bernabeu, which lasts until 2025, the Brazilian is rumored to cost in the neighborhood £50 million.
If Murtough and company can persuade Casemiro that a transfer to Old Trafford would be good for his career, that remains to be seen. The 30-year-prize old’s collection, which includes three La Liga championships and five Champions League victories, is impressive.
Given the Red Devils’ disastrous start to the new Premier League season, the chances of him adding to his trophy cabinet with the club seem remote. After finishing sixth last season, supporters had anticipated that Ten Hag could prompt a quick turnaround, but consecutive losses to Brentford and Brighton have dropped them to the foot of the table.
The most recent defeat at the Brentford Community Stadium was especially shocking because west London quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first 35 minutes. As a sequence of individual mistakes led to goals being conceded and his team suffering a humiliating defeat, Ten Hag appeared shell-shocked from the sidelines.
As if the difficulties on the field weren’t challenging enough, the new manager and Murtaugh are juggling several transfer market responsibilities, with both arriving and outgoing players on the schedule. In addition to a midfielder, United is in desperate need of an attacker, and they may have to pay Matheus Cunha’s full £58 million release clause to pry him away from Atletico Madrid.
Ten Hag is reportedly appalled by how his first few months as United’s manager have turned out. All he has to show for a hectic summer’s worth of effort thus far are the arrivals of Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, and Tyrell Malacia.
